London and Spain...

When I think of Europe all i think about is how expensive it is and how old the buildings are. Ive seen pictures and videos on how beautiful everything is out that side of the world...But when you actually see those monuments, those churches , and meet the people, you will get blown away and appreciate the raw beauty of what human hands can create. We ate at the oldest restaurant in the world, in spain, we walked and ate so much I was surprised I didn't get a Gout attack! There is so much to see and 2 weeks was not enough. This was my first time and certainly not the last.

Jam packed Weekend

This weekend was a memorable one. Sunny days in the bay , and alot of runnin' around.

One of the first things I had to get done was for an art show at Sake Koji Lounge in downtown SJ. Started off painting the background with calligraphy letters, then Chris and I through on the tribal top layer. I figured the painting was big enough for the wall and it turned out a bit smaller than I hoped for. But it ended up working out. Got the piece in there for first fridays art walk.

Then off to Santa Cruz. I had to go fishing. Jae, my pops, and I havent gone in a while. We casted off the piers near the boardwalk. It was a real chill day, hooking the anchovies, and eventually catching nothing! lol, oh well, on to the next...Grabbed some lunch took a nap and headed back.

When you think about Tahoe in the winter, snowboarding and skiing, and just plain snow, come to mind. Well I dont really do either, anything attached to my feet, except shoes. So instead I did a guest spot at my friends tattoo shop, Lake Monster. Owner Reed and Narissa. Let me tell you about tattoo shops, usually lightweight dirty. This space was one of the cleanest spots I've ever been in, OCD at its finest. They never told me how busy it gets, on a saturday, so I found out. I tattooed all walk ins, Waikiki steeze... a micro butterfly, a horse with tribal? Praying hands with a cross behind it , and a Cherry Creek dragon. I haven't done a marathon like that in a while. Good Fun and a place I can definitly tattoo at again.

Videoshoot with WEREHAUS

This past Friday, Cukui had its first official videoshoot with Werehaus, a new media production based out of San Francisco lead by two brothers Austin and Brian Chu. We took instant notice by their impressive online portfolio and with a few exchanges of emails and then phone calls, we were already brainstorming ideas over Thai iced teas and yellow curry along University Ave.

One month later, Werehaus began to film at Humble Beginnings Tattoo Shop in San Jose getting footage of the boys hanging out at the shop and doing some ink work. Despite the rain, we then took a cruise around the neighborhood with the wife's '51 Chevy truck, Bubbles. Lastly, we headed over to Cukui to get scenes of the store and to get some commentary from Orly: "This was the stressful part..the dreaded interview,... i was so mentally drained that my verbal skills were nill, so i asked them to leave me with the mic and let me record on my own. It was sort of a therapy session, telling the loves and sttresses of owning a retail store."

Much thanks to the Werehaus Crew for hooking it up! We're definitely excited about the video and can't wait to share it with the Cukui fam. Trailer coming soon, folks!

Cukui X Fitted Collaboration.

New Releases! This Friday, November 19th, we’ll be releasing our second collaboration tee with our extended ohana out in Hawaii, Fitted Hawaii dubbed “Native Sharks”. They will also be releasing an exclusive colorway in Hawaii. To go along with this T we will also be releasing one of Fitted Hawaii's Newest designs in there ever growing collection: The Nihi. Nihi means to move stealthily, quietly, example would be when one goes boar hunting in the forests, one must blend in with the surrounding environment and reshape from prey to predator. The cap is dipped in camouflage with a pyramid of purple trilocks on the front, purple New Era hit on the left.

That's not all... We also have another T shirt releasing “Tiki Logo T”. To go along with this T we have another Fitted Hawaii Cap the A’o Ikaika chambray Kamehameha, tan upper with a blue brim.

We at Cukui and Humble Beginnings always push forward the core values of community and friendship in all we do. For this month’s art gallery we are making this a special night to help out a friend and talented tattoo artist, Steve Looney. Having been diagnosed with liver disease five years ago Steve has been fighting this hindrance every step of the way, not allowing it to stop him from living a full life. Just last year his liver started to fail and Steve had to undergo a liver transplant on August 30th 2009. Though Steve’s life was spared he and his family are still dealing with the financial issues that come with such operations. Cukui, Humble Beginnings Tattoo, and Steve’s friends have all pulled their talents to showcase art for his cause. Steve will also be in attendance so you will be able to hear his story first hand. 80% of the proceeds from the artwork sold from this show will go to Steve. Lets be generous!

So come on out and bring your friends and family for a night of culture, community, and great people. And also come out and enjoy all the other art showcases going around the area. Japantown is poppin’.

Swype x Cukui Whole Train

Late night sessions...Another damp and cold night in the bay. It was time to put some paint on some steel. We started the walk toward the holy rollers, two Ladders and several bags of spray paint are carried to the spot. My eyes slowly adjusting to the dark night, nervousness and paranoia started to set in. Swype finds the perfect train and the mission begins.

Night workers were about 200 yards away, bats flying through the air and every noise that pierces the silent night gives me the jitters. Five hours and 30 minutes it took to paint this beast, silver fill, black outline, green and pink 3-D, and a white border.

This is what I miss about night missions, going to the yard and painting steel, knowing that the train will soon be leaving to a destination not known to you, but it will be seen by thousands of people. This freight was dedicated to all the writers that we grew up with and the graffiti writers that paved the way. Much respect to Swype and IFUL.

The inspiration, the support, and the foundation that has grown from this shop is only part of what makes Cukui.... Cukui.

Along with the release of our new "Chomp" shirt, our humble brethren's and extended hb fam exhibited their version of a shark. Most of the artwork was for sale and customer's were eager to get these in their own hands. The showcase also featured one of twelve sharks that was exhibited in 2001 by a city sponsored event called SharkByte. The six-foot "sushi shark" that sits in front of our store was made by artist D. Wright. This piece of history happened to be tucked away in the back of our store for the last few years before we moved in. Nonetheless, we were pretty stoked to find something as cool and unique here.

Thanks to everyone that came out to support, especially to SmoovGroovs for providing the music. The Chomp show will only be up for the next couple of weeks (until October 1st), so make sure to check it out soon.

SJ Fam hosted its second annual "Art & Sole" event, a shoe charity and concert. The event took place outdoors in the classy and sassy Hotel Valencia of Santana Row entertained by good music and full bar over lounge chairs and umbrellas. Orly was one of five local artists chosen to participate in contributing his designs which were hand painted with acrylic paint.

This year's proceeds went to San Jose's Downtown Association (SJDA) Downtown Doors - a youth program encouraging talented high school students to get involved in art programs.

2 days before opening. It was a very stress filled day, we had a plumbing problem, so we swapped out the toilet for a new one, last minute touch ups, painting the whole shop, make sure all the inventory was logged in on the computer...set up the back so it will be easier to find items, and make a last minute run of shirts for the opening...There was much more but I think I just blocked it out.

The turnout was memorable, 450 plus people came out and showed their love. We had adoboman out there giving out sliders and tacos, Treatbot slangin' the addictive ice cream.

Music was provided by DJ Sig-O, Shortcut and D-Styles. Just want to say thanks to all that made it out, I was running around so much that if I didnt get a chance to say hello and thank you.

Life was at a new turning point for all of us at Cukui, Jae, meesh, Gen, Sam, Dan, Isaac, Los, Niel, Don, basically all my friends and fam that helped out, it was a joyous day. A new page to write in the sketchbook.

So once again, thank you and I cant wait for all of us to see where our next step is going to be...Orly

Hawaiian-based Morals Fibers teamed-up with local tattoo artist Lucky Olelo to create the Tako t-shirt as part of MF’s newest capsule. Serving as both brand and screen shop, a background into Morals Fibers’ t-shirt screening process is represented in this video. The brand which was originally founded in 2000 by Kyle Ito but has since re-emerged tahnks to the help of Aloha Fixed’s Ryan Lau and the aforementioned Lucky Olelo.

Today was another gloomy day here in the bay. Hugo recycled some of the

old wood to mock up the benches, the counter top and the display case to give a feeling of the space that will be used. It was good to get a rough look at what it will sort of look like. Time to do the fabrication, and wood work...we will keep you posted, and also let you know the opening date...for our flagship store..

Having recently released the 2nd part to the collection, the event included an in-depth perspective into The Tenderloin Project from organizer and photographer Sean Desmond. The Tenderloin Project was launched back in 2009 as Desmond look to highlight the unfortunate and marginalized living within San Francisco’s Tenderloin district.
